Hywel Roberts
Hywel Roberts is a renowned educator, author, and speaker with over thirty years of experience. Known for his innovative approach to teaching, Hywel has inspired curriculum designers and educators from Barnsley to Brussels and Cairo to Cleethorpes. Equally at home leading conferences or working with children in classrooms, his passion for creative, liberated learning is unmistakable.
Hywel leads the PGCE Drama programme at Huddersfield University and contributes to Masters and education programmes at Leeds Beckett, Sheffield, Liverpool, Durham, and Wolverhampton. He remains closely connected to classroom practice, ensuring his insights are always relevant and practical.
A regular keynote speaker at major education conferences, Hywel has worked with organisations such as Barnardo’s, The Princes Trust, and the National Galleries in London and Edinburgh. His award-winning book, Oops! Getting Children to Learn Accidentally, is a favourite among educators worldwide, joined by bestsellers like Botheredness and Uncharted Territories. He also writes for the TES and hosts “Hywel’s Teacher Stories” on Teacher Hug Radio. His next book, a collaboration with Dr Ed Southall, Bothered About Maths will be published in 2026.
Hywel is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and the Chartered College of Teaching. He was recently described as “a world leader in enthusiasm”—a fitting tribute to his energy and impact.
Outside education, Hywel plays double bass and co-owns a cask ale brewery.
